New Streamlined Process to Legalize Unpermitted Security Gates and New All-Electric Requirement for Major Renovations

October 10, 2025

Dear Customers,

Great news! With our partners in PermitSF, we’re making it easier to legalize existing, unpermitted storefront security gates.

Plans, structural calculations and installation details are no longer required for existing, storefront security gates installed before August 20, 2023.

Instead, property owners will submit a building alteration permit, an owner’s disclosure (or contractor statement), and an affidavit self-certifying that the gate complies with California’s building code, including operating, exit, structural and design elements.

For more information, see this handout with Planning, Building and Fire requirements and the self-certification affidavit or visit our new Existing Storefront Security Gate Legalization step-by-step webpage.

We also want to let you know that the City recently passed a new law requiring a building to be converted from gas service to electric service if it is undergoing a major renovation.

While the new law applies to many major renovations, there are technical infeasibility and commercial kitchen exceptions, and staggered compliance deadlines for adaptive reuse and 100% affordable housing projects.

This new law goes into effect July 1, 2026 and we will be updating Administrative Bulletin 112 in the coming months to provide additional technical guidance.

Thank you for your support and partnership. Stay safe.
