Acceptable Specimen Type(s) for Testing - Urethral, rectal, cervical, vaginal, or pharyngeal specimens swabbed onto Modified Thayer-Martin

Transport / Collection Medium -

  • Modified Thayer-Martin
  • Pure culture on Chocolate agar slant
  • Pure culture frozen in Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB) w/15-20% glycerol.

Storage and Preservation of Specimen -

  • Immediately incubate at 5% CO2 conditions, 35 to 37°C. Transport 24-hour old culture at ambient temperature unless sending a frozen specimen.
  • For frozen specimens shipped in TSB w/ 15 to 20% glycerol: Ship specimens on dry ice in compliance with DoT and IATA regulations governing Biological Substances, Category B (UN 3373) Monday through Thursday. Specimen can also be sent via courier Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm.
