Monroe Lace
Commissioner
Monroe Lace is a public school teacher at a Title I school. Previously, Monroe was Miss San Francisco, the first transgender woman to serve in that role in the history of the state pageant, which has been running since 1924. During her year of public service, Monroe championed her public safety platform, "Stay Safe, San Francisco!" Monroe partnered with the San Francisco Unified School District and the San Francisco Education Fund, teaching character education across thirteen schools.
In recognition of her service to the City, Monroe earned a Certificate of Honor from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Monroe also earned the Excellence in Education Award from The Association of Chinese Teachers.
Monroe holds a BA in History from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an MA in Education from San Francisco State University. She also holds a license in cosmetology. Monroe resides in a single-room occupancy hotel in the South of Market neighborhood.
