The San Francisco Arts Commission acknowledges that we are on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone who are the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula. As the indigenous stewards of this land and in accordance with their traditions, the Ramaytush Ohlone have never ceded, lost nor forgotten their responsibilities as the caretakers of this place, as well as for all peoples who reside in their traditional territory. As guests, we recognize that we benefit from living and working on their traditional homeland. We wish to pay our respects by acknowledging the ancestors, elders and relatives of the Ramaytush Community and by affirming their sovereign rights as First Peoples. As a department dedicated to promoting a diverse and equitable Arts and Culture environment in San Francisco, we are committed to supporting the traditional and contemporary evolution of the American Indian community.

      Discussion and possible motion to approve the temporary installation of one snake sculpture designed by artist Stephanie Mufson and sponsored by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Golden State Warriors which measure 4 ft. 5 in. x 6 ft. x 9 ft. 10 in. in celebration of 2024 Chinese New Year in honor of the Year of the Snake to be placed in a location to be determined by Recreation and Parks Department in Union Square from January 18, 2025 through March 2, 2025 which will be maintained by the project sponsor.

  1. Motion to approve Phase 2 Review for Southeast Plant: Operations, Engineering, Maintenance Buildings 
     
  2. Motion to approve Moccasin Engineering & Records Building: Phase 1 Review with the following contingencies: explore expanding view through main lobby to the east; reinforce building entrances with landscape and pathway strategies; and consider alternate materials and proportions to create a greater contrast between the top and bottom colonnade.

  3. Motion to approve Jackson Playground Temporary Mural, a mural design by Victor Solomon. The mural will be installed on the Jackson Playground basketball court, located at 17th and Arkansas St. in District 10. The mural measures approximately 95 ft. long by 50 ft. wide. The artwork is funded by the Courtside Foundation and will not become part of the Civic Art Collection. 
     
  4. Motion to approve and accept into the Civic Art Collection  

Portrait of a Phenomenal Woman: A Monument to Honor Dr. Maya Angelou for the San Francisco Main Library, 2024, bronze on basalt sculpture by Lava Thomas measuring H109 in by W80 in. by D30 in. located in front of the main entrance of the San Francisco Public Library Main Branch at 100 Larkin Street. The artwork was approved as installed under Res. No. 1104-24-464. 
 

  1. Motion to approve and accept into the Civic Art Collection The Only Blue is the Sky, 2024, acrylic paint interior mural by Craig Calderwood measuring approximately 2,300 sq. ft. spanning seven mural walls on three floors located in the San Francisco International Airport, Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Atrium, pre-security, Departures Level, Arrival Level and Mezzanine. The artwork was approved as installed under Res. No. 0701-24-306. 
     
  2.   Motion to approve and accept into the Civic Art Collection Close Encounter with the California Sublime, 2024, acrylic on canvas with gilded frame by Suzanne Husky measuring H69 5/8 in. by W119 7/8 in. located in the San Francisco International Airport, Terminal 1 Center, Meet and Greet area, pre-security, Departures Level. The artwork was approved as installed under Res. No. 0701-24-307. 
     
  3.  Motion to approve and accept into the Civic Art Collection Aurum, 2024, powder coated Stainless Steel and LED sculpture by artist team Hybycozo (Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu), measuring H13 ½  ft. by 12 ft. by 12 ft. and located in Mint Plaza, on Jessie Street between 5th and Mint Streets. The artwork was approved as installed under Res. No. 1202-24-496. 
     
  4.  Motion to authorize the Director of Cultural Affairs to review and approve proposals for temporary artwork and murals to be installed on the new Great Highway Park, managed by the Recreation and Parks Department, pending full time closure of the highway, which is anticipated in February or March of 2025. Approval is for installations that begin after closure until December 31, 2025, and for an installation period of no more than 1 year. For murals, paint may be permitted to naturally fade after 1 year of installation. 
     
  5.  Motion to approve the Project Plan for the 2025 Art on Market Street Poster Series. 
     
  6.  Motion to approve the Project Plan for the San Francisco Main Library Temporary Atrium Mural public art project.

Accessible Meeting Policy 
Per the American Disabilities Act and the Language Access Ordinance, Chinese, Spanish, and/or American Sign Language interpreters will be available upon request. Additionally, every effort will be made to provide a sound enhancement system, meeting materials in alternative formats, and/or a reader. Minutes may be translated after they have been adopted by the Commission. Meeting procedures

1. Agenda items will normally be heard in order. Please note, that on occasion a special circumstance may necessitate that an agenda item be taken out of order. To ensure that an agenda item is not missed, it is advised to arrive at the beginning of the meeting. All agenda changes will be announced by the Chair at the top of the meeting. 

2. Public comment will be taken before or during the Committee’s consideration of each agenda item. Each speaker will be allowed to speak for the time allotted by the Chair at the top of the meeting or up to three (3) minutes.  

3. During General Public Comment, members of the public may address the Commissioners on matters that are within the Arts Commission’s jurisdiction and are not on the agenda. 

4. Any person speaking during a public comment period may supply a brief written summary of their comments, which shall, if no more than 150 words, be included in the official file. Written comments pertaining to this meeting should be submitted to art-info@sfgov.org

5. Persons attending the meeting and those unable to attend may submit written comments regarding the subject of the meeting. Such comments will be made part of the official public record and will be brought to the attention of the committee. Written comments should be submitted to Arts Commission staff via email to art-info@sfgov.org by 5:00 p.m. before the date of the meeting. Please note that names and addresses included in these submittals will become part of the public record. Submittals may be made anonymously. Written public comment submitted to SFAC staff will not be read aloud during the meeting. Communications not received prior to the meeting may be delivered to SFAC staff and will be shared with the commissioners.

Public Comment

Speakers may not transfer their time to another person. Wheelchair-accessible entrances

Wheelchair-accessible entrances are located on Van Ness Avenue and Grove Street.  Please note the wheelchair lift at the Goodlett Place/Polk Street is temporarily not available.  After multiple repairs that were followed by additional breakdowns, the wheelchair lift at the Goodlett/Polk entrance is being replaced for improved operation and reliability.  We anticipate having a functioning lift after the completion of construction in May 2025.  There are elevators and accessible restrooms located on every floor.
