Measuring your sign or awning

Learn what dimensions to measure for your sign or awning permit.

When legalizing an existing sign or awning, you will be asked to provide more measurements on photos.

Signs

Refer to sign types if needed.

Wall signs

Length (feet): Measure vertically from the top to the bottom of any lettering, imagery and background color (distinct from the wall) contained in the sign.

Width (feet): Measure horizontally from the leftmost edge to the rightmost edge of any lettering, imagery, and background color (distinct from the wall) contained in the sign.

Height (feet): Measure vertically from the sidewalk to the bottom edge of the sign.

Thickness (inches): If the sign is illuminated or contained in a frame, measure horizontally from the front to the back of the sign. This usually means the sign cabinet.

Projecting or freestanding signs

Length (feet): Measure vertically from the top to the bottom of the sign's frame.

Width (feet): Measure horizontally from the leftmost edge to the rightmost edge of the sign's frame.

Height (feet): Measure vertically from the sidewalk to the bottom edge of the sign.

Thickness (inches): Measure horizontally from the front to the back of the sign.

Awnings

Refer to awning types if needed.

Maximum vertical height (feet): Measure vertically from the highest point of the awning frame to the lowest point of the awning frame.

Width (feet): Measure horizontally from the leftmost edge to the rightmost edge of the awning's frame. In a marquee, this should be the width of all faces added together.

Height (feet): Measure vertically from the sidewalk to the bottom edge of the awning's frame.

Depth of awning (in): Measure horizontally from the wall to the furthest edge of the awning's frame.
