Infant Care Training Program for Children in the Child Welfare System

The Infant Care Training Program helps people who take care of children 0-5 years old. Many of the children may have medical or developmental challenges. These children are part of the Child Welfare system and need special care.

About the Program:

The Program is supported by the State of California. It gives training to people who care for children with special needs that are in the child welfare system.

Program goals include: 

  • Teach how to care for fragile or special needs babies and children.
  • Connect caregivers with community services that can help them.
  • Support children in finding safe and permanent homes.

What You Will Learn:

  • How being born premature, being exposed to substances before birth, or having a long-term illness can affect a child.
  • Common health issues that affect a child 0-5 years old
  • How to work with birth families to help children succeed.
  • Services and support for families who care for children with special needs.

Trainers and Schedule:

Trainers include doctors, nurses, caregivers, and other professionals from the San Francisco community.

Classes are on Saturdays and weekday evenings to fit different schedules.

There is also a monthly support groups for English and Spanish-speaking Resource Families.

Certification and Requirements:

When you finish the program, you will get a Certificate of Completion and 40 credit hours.

  • All classes are free.
  • You should attend all sessions to earn credit and get certified.
  • The 12-session training is needed for Resource Families caring for children in the foster care system that are 0-3 years old.
  • Try to finish the 12 sessions within 6 months after Pre-Service Training.
  • San Francisco Relatives have 1 year from the first day of placement to finish the program.
