Hans How

A Malaysian-Chinese immigrant and native of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Hans How is a philanthropy and impact investing professional with deep experience deploying capital to resource mission-driven projects, enterprises, funds, and social movements across community development, immigrant rights, affordable housing, environmental resilience, racial and economic justice, and regenerative food and agriculture in the U.S. and globally. He currently serves as Portfolio Manager of the Restorative Economies Fund at the Kataly Foundation, where he leads investments in community-owned and governed projects that close the racial wealth gap and build the political, economic, and cultural power of Black, Indigenous, and all communities of color.

Hans was appointed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to serve as an Immigrant Rights Commissioner for the City and County of San Francisco in 2025. Previously, he served as Vice President of InReach (formerly known as AsylumConnect), a tech nonprofit behind the world's first open-source verified LGBTQ+ resource platform, and co-founded and passed Proposition C, making San Francisco the first major U.S. city to open civic board and commission service beyond citizenship status. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Wesleyan University, where he graduated as a proud first generation college graduate and as a Freeman Asian Scholar.
