About residential treatment
San Francisco Department of Public Health’s (SFDPH) mental health and substance use residential treatment services aim to meet the diverse needs of San Franciscans. We serve San Franciscans who have low incomes, are uninsured, or qualify for Medicare, Medi-Cal, or San Francisco Health Plan.
Many treatment services are tailored to meet the needs of various cultures, languages, and identities. All programs accommodate people regardless of gender expression and identity.
What is residential treatment
While in residential treatment, people live on-site at a care or treatment center in an alcohol- and drug-free setting that provides 24/7 structure and support. Time spent in residential treatment can vary from a few days to a year or more, depending on the program and the individual’s needs. A person may enter residential treatment to:
- Manage withdrawal symptoms
- Join a supportive community focused on recovery
- Rest and recover from a mental health- or substance-related crisis
- Participate in treatment and community supports
- Access transitional housing and skill-building programs for long-term recovery after residential treatment
Residential treatment is one of many treatment options offered. Learn about other treatment options offered by SFDPH.
