Octavia Butler's "A Few Rules for Predicting the Future" (Essence, 2000) argues that predicting the future is not some superpower, but rather a discipline for shaping the future. She shares that prediction requires us to study the patterns of history, understand cause and effect, consider the limits of our perspectives, and know that there will always be surprises. The workshop will use these rules to guide participants through constructing their very own future-forecasting zine.

This program is organized in conversation with "Excavating Uranus, A Psalm for Nyota Uhura." "Excavating Uranus, A Psalm for Nyota Uhura," is a group exhibition that utilizes African cosmologies to translate our inhabiting the past, present, and future simultaneously and the tools and songs needed for time travel. Curated by Ashara Ekundayo, the exhibition brings together the work of Sydney Cain, Ayana V. Jackson, Courtney Desiree Morris, and bryant terry.
