San Francisco’s District 9, which includes the Mission, Bernal Heights, and Portola neighborhoods, is hosting seven Summer Learning Week events.
Aim High
College Exploration Day: Learn, Lead, Belong: Aim High’s Summer Learning Week event centered around a series of college visits paired with student reflection activities, aligned with the theme “Learn, Lead, Belong in San Francisco.” Students learned by exploring college campuses and gaining exposure to higher education pathways and opportunities. They lead by engaging with college representatives, asking questions, and reflecting on their own academic and personal goals. Students also explored what it means to belong in academic spaces by envisioning themselves in college environments and discussing their future aspirations. Through these experiences, students built confidence, deepened their understanding of their educational journey, and felt a stronger sense of belonging in spaces beyond their immediate community.
Bay Area Community Resources: Junipero Serra Elementary School Beacon
Summer Learning BACR Carnival: The Carnival created an inclusive and engaging environment where people of all ages connected, explored, and learned together. In preparation for the event, youth cleaned and beautified the campus while developing a sense of stewardship, teamwork, and pride in their shared spaces. During the carnival, attendees participated in interactive games, cultural activities, and shared experiences that introduced new skills, celebrated diverse traditions, and strengthened community connections. The event also encouraged leadership by empowering youth, volunteers, organizers, and participants to take initiative, collaborate, and contribute to a welcoming, positive atmosphere.
Bay Area Community Resources: Paul Revere Beacon
Paul Revere's Scholars’ Safari: Scholars’ Safari will be an engaging, hands-on summer experience designed to immerse students in learning through interactive, inquiry-based activities across literacy, STEM, the arts, and social-emotional development. Students will rotate through dynamic stations that spark curiosity, encourage collaboration, and strengthen critical thinking skills, while building confidence and a deeper connection to learning in a fun, supportive environment.
Community Youth Center: CYC Moscone Elementary
Explore Healthy Body & Healthy Mind: This event included a health/spa day expo and had different stations that will be lead by our older students (5th/6th graders). It was an opportunity for the younger students to learn about living a healthy lifestyle with healthy habits for the body and mind.
Family Connections Centers: SAE
Leading through the park: Children took the lead in facilitating a hands-on activity at a local park in San Francisco, engaging peers in interactive, play-based learning experiences. Through this opportunity, students practiced leadership, collaboration, and communication skills while fostering a sense of community and connection to their surrounding environment.
Jamestown Community Center: Summer Playhouse at Cesar Chavez Beacon
Exploring Space: Youth engaged in a solar system competition, where each class designed and constructed their own models and showcased them on stage to the entire program. Each class was evaluated based on various criteria, including creativity, resourcefulness, and presentation skills. Participants also shared interesting facts about what they learned regarding our solar system, including planets, the sun, and even comets! At the conclusion of the event, trophies were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners!
Mission YMCA: Mission Achievers
Mission Achievers worked with community partners to gather materials and created "Back To School" kits for 400 youth in the Excelsior Community. Our teens led the initiative and traveled to schools to provide materials to all youth throughout the summer.
Mission YMCA: Power Scholars Academy
Mission Power Scholars expressed their gratitude for the elder community and designed photo frames that stated their appreciation for their volunteer work and other contributions.
MNC Inspiring Success
Mad Scientist: This event is called Mad Scientist, which is going to be a base for kiddos to experience and be curious about each experiment that they are going to be creating. This is a way for kids to be able to interact with each other and share ideas that they have. It will show the importance that each kid may be creating a different experiment but all kiddos can come in together and share their ideas.
