Children, Youth and Their Families

District 8

San Francisco’s District 8, which is home to the Castro, Noe Valley, and Cole Valley neighborhoods, is hosting eight Summer Learning Week events.

Bay Area Community Resources: Mission Ed Center

Summer Learning BACR Carnival: Our event will create an inclusive and engaging environment where people of all ages can connect, explore, and grow together. In preparation for the event, youth will take part in cleaning and beautifying the campus, learning the value of stewardship, teamwork, and pride in shared spaces. Through interactive games, cultural activities, and shared experiences during the carnival, attendees will have opportunities to learn new skills, discover diverse traditions, and engage with their community. The event will encourage leadership by empowering youth, volunteers, organizers, and participants to take initiative, collaborate, and contribute to a positive atmosphere. Photos coming soon!

Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco: Academic Success

BGCSF Academic Competition Day: This event will consist of an elementary school Spelling Bee and a middle school Quiz Bowl. The event aligns with the theme through bringing youth from across Clubs together for friendly academic competition. Although only 4 youth are on the official team, Clubs will engage a larger group of youth all summer long - learning confidence and public speaking through programs that will teach content and spelling. Jamestown Community Center: Summer Voyage at James Lick MS

Strong Structures: Students will apply the engineering and design concepts they have learned about structures to create and construct their own models. Using critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills, they will test their understanding of structural stability, strength, and design principles. The completed models will then be entered into a friendly competition, where students will evaluate how well their creations withstand various challenges and determine which structure remains intact the longest. This hands-on experience will encourage innovation, perseverance, and real-world application of STEM learning. Photos coming soon!

Students will participate in a variety of engaging games, activities, and interactive experiences designed to foster joy, reflection, and community connection. This event will intentionally promote a sense of belonging by bringing together participants from both programs through a collaborative partnership with Bryant & Bessie Elementary School. By creating opportunities for students, families, and staff to connect and celebrate together, the event will strengthen community ties and highlight the meaningful relationships built over the course of the summer. UP ON TOP

The Mission: Each week of camp we will choose a neighborhood in The City, and during our morning session, staff and kids will do research to learn the history of the neighborhood. Each small group will then create an itinerary to complete on our trip to that neighborhood. Our goal is to create social emotional growth through shared experiences which help to ground our participants in the socio-historical context of San Francisco history and culture.
