District 2
San Francisco’s District 2, which includes the Marina, Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow, and Presidio Heights, is hosting four Summer Learning Week events.
Breakthrough San Francisco: Summer Program for Rising 5th-9th Graders
Community Day: On Community Day, our students celebrated the communities they’re part of and the importance of caring for them. From creating hygiene kits for unhoused people across the city, painting a group mural that celebrates Breakthrough’s core values of collaboration, excellence, gratitude, perseverance, and responsibility, to sharing poems that explored students’ identities and heritage.
Buena Vista Child Care: Buena Vista Summer Camp
Community Connection: At Community Connection our middle school students will take the lead, guiding younger grades on an exploration to discover the wildlife right in our own backyard. With support from Tunnel Tops, youth will be equipped with backpacks filled with tools like binoculars and magnifying glasses to enhance their learning experience. We will be exploring and learning together in this beautiful outdoor space, where everyone can feel a true sense of belonging. Photos coming soon!

The YMCA of Greater San Francisco, The Richmond District YMCA, and The Stonestown Family YMCA: Power Scholars Academy
Power Scholars Academy- 10 Years of Excellence: This event was a culmination of our summer program and 10-year effort to develop scholars to Learn, Lead, and Belong, in the city of San Francisco. Power Scholars Academy has been a collaborative effort engaging all stakeholders: youth, teachers, parents & families, youth development practitioners, and community partners, in the development of scholars; aligned under a shared goal of ensuring all youth have the mindset, learning, and resources necessary to define success and achieve it for themselves. We took this opportunity to not only celebrate the accomplishments of our youth and families, but to highlight the teachers who have been pillars of this program for 10 years. Our youth presented a capsule of appreciation to the teachers that included words of appreciation, celebratory performances, and tangible affirmations. This event aligned with the theme by addressing the Community engagement, Belonging, Leadership, and Caring for others priority areas.

Presidio YMCA: Power Scholars Academy
Exploratorium Educational Excursion: Students participated in an educational excursion to the Exploratorium, where they engaged in hands-on STEAM activities that fostered curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Through the interactive exhibits and collaborative learning experiences, students explored scientific concepts while developing problem-solving skills. The excursion also provided opportunities for students to lead others in play and discovery, strengthening their communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities. Students deepened their sense of belonging in the city while connecting to the rich learning opportunities available in their community.
