September Honors Gold Star Families

During the month of September, we honor and remember the mothers and families of service members who gave their lives in the line of duty. Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, observed on September 27, recognizes their profound sacrifices and enduring strength. The tradition began during World War I, when grieving families displayed flags with gold stars to signify a fallen loved one. In 1936, Congress officially designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day, and in 2011 the observance was expanded to include all family members, becoming Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day. It’s a solemn opportunity to recognize their courage, acknowledge their loss, and support those who continue to carry the memory of their loved ones.
