Voters pass Proposition E

Time:November 2024

Proposition E created a Commission Streamlining Task Force to recommend ways to change, remove, or combine the City’s 150+ boards and commissions (or "public bodies").

Task Force members were chosen by the Mayor, Board of Supervisors, City Administrator, City Attorney, and Controller.

Task Force meets and develops recommendations

Time:January–December 2025

The Task Force held public meetings to discuss and make preliminary decisions about the City's public bodies.

  • January–August: Identify active and inactive bodies; develop general rules and templates.
  • September–November: Make initial decisions about each public body.
  • November–December: Review past decisions, revisit deferred decisions, and check for consistency.

Final report

Time:December 2025–January 2026

The Task Force prepared a final report with its recommendations for the Mayor and Board of Supervisors by February 1, 2026.

Draft legislation

Time:January–February 2026

The City Attorney drafted legislation reflecting the Task Force's final recommendations to be sent to the Board of Supervisors by March 1, 2026.

The proposed legislation included changes to the City's Administrative Code.

Board of Supervisors hearing

Time:March 2026

The Board of Supervisors held a hearing on the proposed legislation on March 17, 2026. Visit sf.gov/bos for more information.

Ordinance takes effect

Time:June 2026

The Task Force's proposed legislation took effect within 90 days of the Board of Supervisors hearing.

Charter amendment

Time:July 2026

The Board of Supervisors decided to put a Charter amendment with some of the Task Force's recommendations on the November ballot.

Voter approval of Charter amendment

Time:November 3, 2026

Certain changes to the Charter language about public bodies will appear on the ballot.

Task Force disbands

Time:January 2027

The Commission Streamlining Task Force completes its work and dissolves by January 31, 2027.
