Carla Cuevas

Carla Cuevas is a 26-year resident of San Francisco and proud immigrant, currently living, studying, and working in the South of Market (SOMA) neighborhood. She has a deep, personal understanding of the city’s housing, healthcare, and public safety systems, having successfully navigated these services herself.

Carla knows firsthand how important it is for our various public safety departments to deliver services effectively and transparently to the people of San Francisco. As a member of the SDOB, Carla wants to make sure every member of the community remains safe and that the Sheriff’s department can effectively serve and protect all of San Francisco’s residents, both inside and out of the jail system.

Professionally, Carla is a Certified Court Interpreter for the Superior Court of California. In this role for over 15 years, it provides her with insight into how custodial conditions impact the community. As a lifelong advocate, she has also worked with the San Francisco Unified School District’s Parent Advisory Committee, Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco, the San Francisco Bar Association’s Justice and Diversity Center and California Alliance of Legal Interpreters, focusing on expanding language access and dignity for all residents.

After Carla witnessed a stabbing in her alley, Carla worked formed a grassroots collation of neighbors to tackle the issues of public safety in SOMA. She became a co-founder of the Langton Neighborhood Association (LNA), with a focus on public safety and quality of life issues. She has led LNA’s efforts to transform local spaces into safe, accessible environments. Carla has also volunteered with other community serving organizations such as the Community Restraining Order Clinic and Faithful Fools.

Carla earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico and the University of San Francisco. Currently, she is a candidate for a Master of Legal Studies degree from UC Law San Francisco (previously UC Hastings).
