Apply for an Open Flame Permit
If you want to use candles or other open flame decorative lighting in your restaurant, bar, or event space in San Francisco, you need an Open Flame Permit from the Fire Department.

Who needs this permit
You need this permit if you plan to use any of the following in a public assembly space, like a restaurant or bar:
- Candles on dining tables
- Candles on buffet tables or stands
- Other decorative lighting that has an open flame
Before you apply
Make sure your devices meet the requirements
Your candles or open flame devices must:
- Have flames enclosed in a non-combustible (won't burn) chimney or holder
- Be stable and not easily knocked over
- Not have side openings larger than 3/8 inch

What to do
After you get your permit
Keep a copy on-site. Fire inspectors may ask to see your permit during inspections.
Get a new permit if:
- Your business changes ownership
- You want to use a different type of candle or device
