J.R. Eppler

J.R. Eppler is an attorney providing general outside counsel and transactional legal services to small and medium-sized businesses and individuals through his corporate law office, Eppler Legal, Inc. A native of Oklahoma City, J.R. moved to California to attend Stanford University, where he earned a B.A. in economics and history. Following a year of teaching middle school math in the Bay Area, J.R. moved to Los Angeles and completed the joint degree program at the UCLA School of Law and UCLA/Anderson School of Management. He then promptly moved to San Francisco and began working as an associate attorney at Heller Ehrman. J.R. also worked at Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, and Crowell & Moring before opening his own practice. He has lived in Potrero Hill since 2010 with his wife, a public librarian, and now his son, a proud student with SFUSD. J.R. serves as President of the Potrero Boosters Neighborhood Association and on the boards of several community groups. It has been reported that he “loves a good working group,” particularly when it involves transit. J.R. also loves cooking, college football, and boxing, among other things. Prior to his appointment to the Board of Appeals on September 27, 2022, by the Board of Supervisors President Shamann Walton, J.R. served on the Building Inspection Commission. His term will expire on July 1, 2026.

The Board's office telephone number is 628-652-1150 and our email address is boardofappeals@sfgov.org. Our staff will reply to voicemails and emails received outside of our normal office hours as soon as practicable.

The Board's office staff is on site at the office during business hours. If you have an issue that requires in-person attention, please note that the Board's office staff is limited to an executive director, a legal assistant, and a clerk; to ensure that a staff member with the appropriate expertise is available to address your specific needs, please make an appointment in advance by calling or emailing the office. Appointments are also necessary because the Board office is located in a secured area of the Permit Center (14th Floor); access by the public needs to be arranged in advance.

Please note that on Mondays, the Permit Center physically opens to the public at 9:00 a.m. (Board staff are available by phone or email starting at 8:00 a.m.).
