Radiological objects

All people will experience some exposure to radiation through regular life activities like being exposed to the sun. Exposure to low levels of radiation can increase the risk of cancer over a lifetime. At the Shipyard, the Navy is searching for and removing radiological objects. The Navy has found objects containing radiation at the Shipyard, including deck makers.

Review the Navy’s fact sheet about the discovery of a deck maker at the Shipyard.

Closed to the public

The areas at the Shipyard where radiological objects are expected to be found, are unoccupied and closed to the public. Therefore, these objects are not believed to pose a risk of exposure to the public.

If you have questions about radiological safety at the Shipyard, you can contact the Navy’s radiological health and safety expert Dr. Kathryn Higley by phone at 541-737-0675 or email at kathryn.higley@oregonstate.edu

If you are worried about lab results that indicate you have been exposed to concerning levels of radiation, talk to your primary healthcare provider.

Report concerns about suspected radiological objects

If you see an object at the Shipyard that you believe is a radiological object like a deck maker, DO NOT TOUCH IT. You can:
