Dental School-Based Program partnered with SFUSD

Our school-based program provides the following prevention programs for selected San Francisco Unified School District schools. SFUSD school staff or parent volunteers are charged with encouraging participation and completing necessary program paperwork.

Kindergarten Screening

  • We provide the opportunity for most kindergarten students in the SFUSD to receive a free dental screening. The screenings are provided by local dentists and hygienists at the child's school during regular school hours.
  • The goals of the program are to determine the oral health status of kindergarten children in San Francisco's public schools, identify children with untreated dental decay, initiate access into dental care and obtain a dental "home", and conduct a collaborative activity with the private practice community.

Sealant Program

  • We provide free sealant treatment for most SFUSD 2nd grade and 5th grade students. A dentist or hygienist will perform a dental screening prior to the sealant placement to determine eligibility. Students will be eligible for sealant treatment if students' permanent molar teeth are present, fully erupted, and free of decay or fillings.
  • Any kindergarteners who qualify for sealants will also be added to our sealant program.
  • A team of dental hygienist and dental assistant will set up a mobile "dental clinic" at your child's school and perform the sealant treatment during regular school hours.
  • A consent form must be signed by child's legal guardian prior to the dental screening and sealants placement.

Fluoride Varnish for Pre-K & TK students

  • We provide free dental screening and fluoride varnish application at selected SFUSD early education schools. Fluoride varnish is a protective coating to prevent early tooth decay. A dentist or hygienist will provide a dental screening and apply fluoride varnish at your child's school during regular school hours.
  • A consent form must be signed by child's legal guardian prior to the dental screening and fluoride varnish application.
